The Department of Applied Sciences and Humanities was formed in 1990. Dr. S. S. Joshi was the first Head of the Applied Science and Humanities department at TKIET, Warananagar.
This department provides a breadth of knowledge in pure and basic sciences like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and English Communication Skills with engineering practices. Applied Sciences and Humanities subjects are the foundation for all disciplines such as Mechanical, Chemical, Civil, Electronics and Telecommunication, and Computer Science & Engineering.
First Year department has implemented new education policy- 2020 from the academic year 2023-224 with the goal of holistic development of the students.
To improve the students’ foundational engineering knowledge, this department is committed to fostering core ideas and scientific understanding. Its goal is to give aspirant scientists and engineers a values-based education.
The Department of Applied Sciences and Humanities is an excellent blend of veteran, competent, experienced and dynamic faculty. They are vigorously involved in teaching and research activities to fulfill educational objectives. The faculty members regularly attend seminars, workshops and training programs on multi-disciplinary subjects. Extracting and disseminating vital information forms the essential tenet of engineering education which the department ensures by taking special care for improving communication skills in the English language. The department currently comprises well qualified faculty members, organized into four units along broad disciplinary lines – Chemistry, English, Mathematics and Physics. The faculty has addressed itself to the need to orient the students towards the ultimate goal of relating their knowledge to the reality of life situations.
Salient Features of the Department:
Following are the salient features of the Applied Sciences and Humanities at TKIET, Warananagar:
We proudly say that this is the first department under Shivaji University which has formed FESA (First Year Students Association) to provide a platform for the students to hone their skills and hidden potential. It organizes different competitions for the students like quiz, elocution, creative writing, e-sports, photography, group discussion etc. Such activities definitely help students to develop their skills and achieve excellence in their respective fields.
One of the important steps of the department is its student centric guardian scheme which is effectively executed in the department. Under this scheme, 25 students are allotted to one teaching faculty and he or she looks after all the students by taking personal care of each one of them. The ultimate target of the guardian scheme is to personally provide solutions to each problem of the students and make learning environment more feasible to all students. Students share their personal, academic and other problems to the allotted faculty and accordingly, the said faculty gives solutions after consulting with the higher authorities like heads, principal etc.

At department, we always strive hard in achieving the best exam results which is a reflection of consistent effort, effective preparation, and a strategic approach to studying. It begins with understanding the syllabus thoroughly, ensuring all topics are covered, and recognizing the areas that require more focus. Time management plays a critical role, as it allows students to allocate sufficient time to each subject while avoiding last-minute cramming. We practice consistent revision, especially of challenging concepts, help solidify knowledge and boosts confidence.
By adopting active study techniques, such as summarizing key points, practicing past exam papers, and engaging in group study sessions, we enhance retention and understanding among students. Our attempt of staying organized with study schedules and prioritizing tasks according to difficulty level also ensures efficient use of time.
By combining these strategies, our students are better equipped to perform at their best and attain exceptional exam outcomes.
At department, every semester we organize parents meeting to show the progress of the students and keep them updated with the progress of their ward. This helps all parents to interact with the teachers and know the difficulties, results and academic progress of the student. This is the platform for the parents to know their wards’ detail records such as attendance, marks, discipline and other academic information.
It helps to establish proper coordination between parents and teachers to bring out the best from the students.
The first year department has also established ‘Industry Advisory Board’ from the academic year 2024-25. Under this initiative, experienced and highly educated industry personnel are appointed as the board members. All these board members provide important inputs for strengthening the academics of the department as per the need of industries.
The department of first year engineering organizes different events for the students to explore the skills and hidden potential of the students. Following are the details of the events organized for the students:
Every year the department organizes a national level paper presentation and project competition which are entitled as ‘EUREKA’ and ‘JIDNYASA’. Many students actively participate in these two events and showcase their technical and other skills.
In order to develop the coding skills among the aspiring engineers, at department we have established a coding club which is entitled as ‘CODE BITE’ club. This is the platform for the students to hone and practice their coding skills which is the need of time.
Along with cultivating the technical skills, the department also insists to enhance the cultural participation of the students. This gives students an opportunity to explore their hidden and extra-curricular skills. It brings out the holistic development among the students.
At department, we believe that cultural activities play a significant role in the overall development of students by promoting creativity, teamwork, and a sense of belonging. Engaging in such activities exposes students to diverse traditions, languages, and art forms, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of different cultures. These experiences also help build communication and leadership skills, as students often work together on projects and performances. Additionally, cultural activities can foster emotional well-being by providing an outlet for self-expression and stress relief. Overall, they contribute to the holistic development of students, preparing them for a globalized world while instilling values of inclusivity and respect.
The first year department also focuses on giving opportunities to the students in sports. We believe the fact that sports are crucial for students as they promote physical health, improve fitness, and develop motor skills. Regular participation in sports enhances discipline, time management, and teamwork, while also fostering leadership qualities and the ability to work under pressure. Beyond physical benefits, sports contribute to mental well-being by reducing stress and boosting self-confidence. They also encourage resilience and perseverance, as students learn to handle both victories and setbacks. Moreover, engaging in sports can create opportunities for social interaction, helping students build friendships and develop a sense of community. Ultimately, sports play an essential role in shaping well-rounded individuals, preparing them for academic and life challenges.
Our student Miss. Shravani Bhosale and Miss. Nirzara Patil Jadhav participated in West Zone Inter Basketball Tournament held at ITM University, Gwalior. Students also participated in ‘Khelo India’ sports competitions.
Through sports activities, students develop their physical and mental strengths that further helps in their studies and maintain good health.
